Legends and Secrets

The city of Corfu is linked to many legends, where the boundaries of reality and fiction are interwine. Legend has it that the entire Old Town is hollow underneath, especially the area below Spianada with underground tunnels connecting the Old with the New Fortress. These passages are closed for security reasons, but during the bombardments of 1943 many people sought refuge there. Other legends state that there are secret passages which connect the city and the Forts with the islet of Vidos (which also had a fort, demolished in 1864, just before the Union of the Ionian Islands with Greece).

Another fascinating story of the Corfiat tradition is Sagrado. These are mazy, narrow dungeons, in the basements of mansions. According to legend, during the Venetian occupation, the outlaws and the fugitives had the right to seek shelter in those mansions when the police was hunting them down. Rumor has it that the Aristocrats sometimes punished the alleged criminals and this is why these dungeons became notorious. During WW II, the Germans opened few of these Sagrados and discovered human skeletons and skulls. Seek for these dungeons in the basements of the Androutselis, Rivellis and Sordina’s mansions.

7576kkv6

This is the westernmost outpost of the Byzantine Empire and the Despotate of Epirus to which Corfu belonged until 1267 AD, it is 36 mins away from Serenità Apartments approximately 22,3km near the village of Krini north of Paleokastritsa next to a monastery. Built in the early 12th century AD by the Despot of Epirus Duke Michael-Angelos Komnenos the second, and in its prime, in an emergency it could protect the entire population of the region, about 4000 people.Inside the castle two large water tanks and the churches of the Holy Archangels and Agia Kiriaki are preserved. The church of the Archangels was built in 1784 on the site of an older church. Agia Kiriaki was built inside a small cave and has 18th century paintings.

Aggelokastro(Angel`s castle) saw many sieges but never fell except once to the Venetians after a six month siege in 1386. In 1537 only 8 soldiers of his guard with the help of the residents were needed in order to repel the attack of Barbarossa. The Turks tried again and failed to conquer the Castle in 1571. The names of the villages around got their names from the soldiers who took pieces of land to settle on when they retired.

Examples are: Makris-Makrades, Vistonas-Vistonas, Doukas-Doukades, Aspiotis-Aspiotades, Kabbadias-Kabbadades etc.

Ano Peritheia – Travel back in time

21997213

Ano Peritheia is a little bit isolated and quite far from the capital town of Kerkyra 1h and 13 mins away from Serenità Apartments approximately 50km but it’s definitely worth a visit, simply because it’s out of the ordinary. The ghost-town of Ano Peritheia is located on the north part of the island in the slopes of Pantokratoras Mountain.

Weird tales, urban legends and obscure narrations are linked to this place. An abandoned, mysterious and alluring medieval mountain village with deserted honey-stone and stucco mansions with rosy tiled roofs, Ano Peritheia was built at this isolated location around the 14th century by locals who wanted to be protected from the pirates, as well as the plague the island suffered.

Some people say that it was deserted when Corfu started becoming a popular holiday destination and everybody moved back to the seashore. But according to others, the plague did eventually reach the village leading to the death of many of its inhabitants and the rest just left. This entire village is a unique architectural monument and it’s definitely worth your visit. During the summer months there are two taverns with traditional cuisine, operating within the walls of this amazing ghost medieval town.

Lake Korission

limalikes

If you are a nature lover do visit this beautiful saltwater lagoon, about 28,6 km away from Serenità Apartments (47mins). It’s a rare wetland, with wild vegetation and hundreds different types of birds, like curlews, egrets and oyster birds, widgeons and cormorants. There is also a small cedar forest nearby. The beach of Halikounas is at a close distance and it’s the favorite of those who prefer peace, quiet and crystal clear shallow waters.

Canal d’ Amour

3443t543

For those of you incurably romantics, there is a place you should definitely visit. Just left of the long sandy beach of Sidari, you will see the Canal d’ Amour (the channel of love). It’s basically a tunnel, between the rocks. Tradition says that whoever swims in this channel towards the other side will meet the love of their life. The entire beach is filled with small coves and sea caves and surrounding rocks have been sculpted by the winds and the sea, creating astonishing ensembles.

Paxoi – Antipaxoi

paxoi04

If you are planning to stay at Corfu for several days, take the flying dolphin from Corfu port and visit the exotic, tiny islets of Paxoi. Paxos is one large olive grove, with trees that reach all the way to the seashore. It has 64 churches, about 2.500 inhabitants and few truly exotic beaches with turquoise blue waters and pure white pebbles.

Antipaxos is about 2 nautical miles from Paxos and has 2 settlements and about 20 permanent residents. You will immensely enjoy swimming in the emerald waters and tasting the fresh fish in the local taverns. Prince William and Harry enjoyed it!

Some info

Paxos is the smallest of the Ionian Islands, lying just 11 km from the southernmost tip of Corfu. Many visitors return year after year to Paxos to experience the intimacy of this peaceful haven, the genuine friendliness of the local Paxiots, and the captivating scenery. Paxos is covered in many olive groves intersected by dry-stone walls and paths, that often lead to a derelict villa or abandoned stone olive press! The gnarled and twisted olive trees, some of them hundreds of years old, shelter numerous species of wild flowers at their roots, while here and there, small vineyards flourish. This serene and unspoiled landscape is what makes a holiday to the island of Paxos truly memorable.

It is traditionally believed that the Phoenicians were the first to settle Paxos, and that the name may be derived from the Phoenician word 'paks' meaning 'slate'. Another version is that some inhabitants of Paxous in Sicily were expatriated and forced to move to Paxoi, naming the islands after their home town. The Metropolitan Archbishop of Paramythia, Athenagoras, says 'Paxos' refers to the flagstones that came from the islands' quarries and were exported. The Thesaurus of the Greek Language by Errikos Stefanou, etymologises the name from the ancient Greek verb 'pignyo' in the future tense - 'pixo'. Another version states that it may have come from the expression paksosas thyras - meaning closed doors, given that the port of Gaios is of the closed type. Paxos or Paxi? Apparently Paxos refers to the main island, Paxi refers to the entire group of small islands including Anti-Paxos.

It is believed that the shipping magnate, Aristotle Onasis, was a big fan of the island of Paxos and therefore donated funds to build the main road which runs from Gaios to Lakka! The islanders of Paxos do a complete change around from summer to winter. During the summer months, many are running or working in restaurants and tavernas to cater for the tourist. While during the winter months, help with the olive gathering and harvest, any building/maintenance repairs and some having a well earned holiday.

Gaios

There are many reasons to visit Gaios - chic boutiques and old-fashioned village stores, a main square where cafe atmosphere and busy boat life mingle pleasantly, and some interesting sights. A visit to the Museum and the Monastery on the islet opposite are worthwhile. An intriguing variety of eating establishments makes this a fascinating place to visit, with an atmosphere all its own.

Loggos

Loggos is one of the prettiest villages in Paxos. The tiny harbour of Loggos itself is enchanting, colourful enough for any artist or photographer, with a refreshingly intimate atmosphere. Three mini-markets, a bakery with wonderful fresh bread every day, and supplies of fresh fruit and vegetables brought over regularly from the mainland, make self-catering a simple matter - but who could resist the conviviality and choice of excellent food at the Loggos waterfront tavernas? Freshly-caught fish tops the menu every night and there is an attractive 'cosmopolitan buzz'. Visit the old Loggos soap factory, Anemoyiannis (Next to the School) This has recently been sold and renovations are due to start soon.

Lakka

Lakka is a very pretty harbour at the end of a deep narrow bay on the north coast. It is a very popular stopping place for yachts and is well worth a visit for the sight of its magnificent natural harbour, filled with marine of all kinds. Lakka has excellent beaches with natural shade, and a good selection of restaurants and bars

Kaltsionisi

This is a tiny island covered in bright green vegetation that lies off the southernmost tip of Paxos, close to Moggonisi. It is crowned by a small church, which originates from 1686 and is dedicated to Saint Spiridon

There is no airport on tiny Paxos - a factor that has helped to keep the crowds at bay; until recently, access was only possible by ferry boat from Corfu or the Greek mainland to Gaios. The introduction of a seaplane service has added a certain romantic thrill to travel to Paxos.

Paxos Cliffs

The West coast of Paxos, pounded by violent winter seas over the centuries, is spectacularly beautiful, with soaring white limestone cliffs, huge sea caves, and almost inaccessible beaches. Cliff top paths do lead to some fine views, but nothing can beat a boat excursion for the sight of those cliffs from the sea. The fantastic Tripitos Arch is one of the highlights of this coastline.

Plani Lighthouse

The Plani Lighthouse is situated on the headland west of Lakka. Paths run beside it and down to some quiet beaches. It is not open to the public.

Olive Press Museum

You will find the Olive Press Museum on the main road between Gaios and Lakka, just outside the village of Magazia. This was built in 1865, re-purchased and renovated in 1936 and was still working until 1960. It has now recently been restored and you can now visit to see the olive press working and purchase local produce. Open from 1100 - 1400 hours every day.

Beaches of paxos

Mongonissi: At the southern point of Paxos, one of the best beaches on the island is the sandy beach of Mongonissi, which has recently been dynamited out of cliffs and filled with sand. It has easy access by road from Gaios. Wonderful, clear blue sea and perfectly safe bathing. There is free mooring for up to 50 boats and yachts. Shower and toilet facilities are available along with wind surfing and paddle boats.

Kaki langada: This beach is north of Gaios and is sheltered with pebbles. There is a cantina on the beach during the high season.

Levrecchio: A fine shingle beach about five minutes walk south of Loggos and one of the busiest beaches on Paxos in the high season.

Kipos And Marmari: The beaches of Kipos and Marmari are near to Loggos. Beautiful small coves in a pretty bay with welcome shade from the olive trees that grow right down to the shoreline. Only accessible by walking or by boat.

Pounda and Kipiadi: Further south from Loggos can be found the beach of Pounda, down a small track from the main road. This track also branches south to the long, pebble beach of Kipiadi. This is a favourite anchorage for yachts

Harama And Kanoni: Harama and Kanoni are two lovely beaches inside the bay of Lakka. Beautiful clear waters with a sandy bottom, gently shelving, so very popular with families. Above the shoreline are bright pebbles - bleached white by the sunlight. The beaches here are perfect for swimming - especially those with young families as the protected bay of Lakka ensures that is does not become rough at anytime.

Monodendri And Glyfada: The most popular beach along the stretch of coast from Lakka south to Loggos is Monodendri. (the name means single tree). It has several facilities. Glyfada is further south but as this can only be reached along a steep footpath from the south, it is rarely visited. Water sports are available at Monodendri Beach

There are a few houses on this little island, mostly summer houses belonging to local people and owners of the vineyards.

Scuba Diving

scuba diving

For those of you who love scuba diving, the peculiar underwater landscape of Corfu will not disappoint you.

The most popular diving spots are:

Sceloudi Island, a small rocky islet with an exotic underworld filled with parrotfish, barracudas, breams and groupers, just off Palaiokastritsa.

• Neptune’s Cave is a cavern with many narrow channels, two domes and spectacular stalactites and stalagmites.

Odysseus is an offshore rocky islet and a top diving spot, listed among the best 100 of the world. Gigantic vertical cliffs, numerous reefs, fantastic underwater architecture and marine life.

The Blue Eye, an underwater labyrinth, with one cavern and three large exits. The walls are covered with sponges and it’s recommended only for experienced divers.

The Anchor is a peculiar bat cave. Divers can witness debris from a British ammunition transporter, which exploded and sunk in this very spot in 1944. The anchor lays at a 25m depth and its chain leads to the reef’s entrance.

The Hole of Ha is a fascinating cave filled with natural light. A long underwater tunnel leads to a hall. As the ceiling of the hall has collapsed, you will have an astounding view of the trees and the sky through the water.

Diapontian Islands

These little islands could easily give a new meaning to the expression of a “hidden paradise”. Othonoi, Ereikoussa and Mathraki are located northwest of Corfu. The complex of Diapontia Islands is accessible by boats departing from Sidari (1h and 10 mins away from Serenità Apartments - 43,2km) and Arilla (54 mins away from Serenità Apartments - 35km).

Othonoi is where one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece is located.

Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality of Corfu, of which it is a municipal unit.It is the westernmost point of Greece, located northwest of Corfu. Population 392 (2011). In the 19th century the island used to be the capital of the Diapontia Islands municipality, which also included nearby islands of Ereikoussa and Mathraki. Most of the island's inhabitants can trace their origins to Paxi island, south of Corfu, as people from Paxi were settled in the island beginning in the 1570s by the Venetian Republic. A cave, near the Aspri Ammos (White Sand) beach, is traditionally believed to have been the place where Calypso kept Odysseus captive.

Othonoi is mentioned from antiquity under the name Othronos. The current name is a corruption of the ancient name. The ancient Greeks also believed that Othonoi was the legendary island of Calypso. A big sea cave of the island is today called Calypso's cave. During the medieval period the island may have been depopulated. During the Battle of Lepanto no resident were mentioned on the island. Later, people from Epirus settled on the island and from there some of them settled on the other Diapontia Islands, Ereikoussa and Mathraki. The island became part of Greece in 1864, after the concession of the Ionian Islands.

Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality of Corfu, of which it is a municipal unit. It is located off the northwestern coast of the island of Corfu, and is almost equidistant from Corfu to the southeast, Mathraki to the southwest, and Othonoi to the west. There is only one town on the island, also named Ereikoússa. Its population was 496 at the 2011 census and its land area is 3.7 square kilometres (1 sq mi). The island is rich in green forests, filled with cypress, and olive trees. It has two beaches, Porto (Πόρτο) and Braghini (Μπραγκίνι); the names are of Italian origin, and date back to the period of Venetian rule. Braghini is rarely visited because it is further away from the main part of the island.

Mathraki

mathraki 03

There are few traditional fish taverns and a couple of hotels, for those who prefer to enjoy the unspoiled natural beauty of the Ionian Sea. Mathraki is an island and a former community of the Ionian Islands, Greece. It is one of the Diapontia Islands. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality of Corfu, of which it is a municipal unit. Population 329 (2011).
